Luas Fun Summer Activity Guide: HistoryThis week’s theme in the Luas Fun Summer Activity Guide is History. Ireland has a wealth of museums with hands-on work-shops where you and the kids can learn about Ireland in times gone by. National Heritage week is coming up from 18-26 August, so take Luas and brush up on your history!

DUBLINIA, CHRISTCHURCH

History – DubliniaWhat: Dublinia is a heritage centre featuring 3 exhibitions; Viking, Medieval and History Hunters which brings Dublin’s colourful history full circle. There is an excavation site and artefacts on display. Every Saturday in August 4/11/18/25 at 12 noon and 14:00, there is an Archaeological dig suitable for children only.
When: Daily, 10:00-17:00

HANDS ON HISTORY, COLLINS BARRACKS, BENBURB STREET

History – Hands on History, Collins Barracks

What: Fun family learning with the Museum’s collection of objects: a handling session. Drop-in activity suitable for all ages.

ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM, KILDARE STREET

History – Archaeology MuseumWhat: From Vikings to Ancient Egypt, Prehistoric Ireland to Bog Bodies there's plenty to capture the imagination of all the family. The museum also provides tailored tours and events for families, as well as an activity cart in the Museum where little ones can get creative. Examine Iron Age finds from Irish wetlands including bog butter and the mysterious bog bodies.

THE TOP TEN, ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM, KILDARE STREET

History – The Top Ten, Archaeology MuseumWhat: Explore 7,000 years of Irish history through 10 exciting artefacts, including a gold lunula, the Tara Brooch and the Ardagh Chalice!

RIDDLE OF THE BONES, NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM, MERRION STREET

History – Riddle of the Bones, Natural History MuseumWhat: Drop in to the Discovery Zone where you can inspect bones and fossils, meet Museum staff and discover how to unlock the riddles of the bones. Suitable for all ages, no booking required.

History – Take a Trail, Archaeology MuseumWhat: To celebrate National Heritage Week 2012, why not drop in and try worksheets in Irish? Choose from Stone Age Ireland, Viking Ireland, the Treasury Trail or My Favourite Object. These activity sheets are available in the reception area and the activity cart in the Museum.
