Don’t forget! Touch On & Off Free Travel Cards

01 October 2015

The Department of Social Protection are rolling out new Public Services Cards. These new Public Services Cards allow people to access a wide range of welfare services including, for some people, Free Travel. These cards will eventually replace the current Free Travel Pass.

If you have been issued one of the new Public Services Cards with Free Travel this is now you use it on Luas;

  • Step 1 - Touch On at the Validator on the Stop and get on the Luas tram. You will hear a positive beep and a message will display on the Validator when you Touch On successfully.
  • Step 2 - Produce your Public Services Card with Free Travel for inspection if requested.
  • Step 3 - Get off the Luas tram. Touch Off at the Validator on the Stop. You will hear a positive beep and a message will display on the Validator when you Touch Off successfully.

When you Touch On your Public Services Card at the Validator you validate your card. A validated card is much quicker and easier to inspect so you’ll save yourself a lot of time and hassle.

There are 3 types of Public Services Cards with Free Travel which are valid for Free Travel on Luas; these are displayed below.

This card has FT - P at the top left of the front of the card; this indicates Free Travel for the person identified on the card. The person identified on the card can avail of Free Travel with this card. No other person accompanying the person can avail of Free Travel with this card.

This card has FT + S at the top left of the front of the card; this indicates Free Travel for the person identified on the card plus their Spouse. Only the person identified on the card plus their Spouse, Partner or Cohabitant can avail of Free Travel with this card.

This card has FT + C at the top left of the front of the card; this indicates Free Travel for the person identified on the card plus their Companion. The person identified on the card plus their Companion (over 16yrs) can avail of Free Travel with this card.

If you haven’t received a new Public Services Card and are still using a valid Free Travel Pass don’t worry. Just continue to use it as normal and Luas Revenue Protection Officers will continue to inspect and verify it as normal.
