Each year Luas carries millions of passengers on its trams. If even a small percentage of passengers failed to pay for their tickets, the revenue lost to Luas would be substantial.

Fare evasion is a criminal offence. You must be in possession of a valid ticket for the journey you are making before you get on any Luas tram. If you do not have a valid ticket or validated TFI Leap Card when asked to produce your ticket you can be prosecuted in the District Court under the Railway Safety Act 2005. A passenger who travels without a valid ticket faces a fine of up to €1,000 on conviction in the District Court as well as legal costs.

If you cannot produce a valid ticket when requested to do so by a Customer Agent or Authorised Officer, you may be issued with a Standard Fare Notice (SFN).

Submitting a Statement of Explanation

You have been issued with a Standard Fare Notice (SFN) for €100 in accordance with the Light Railway Byelaws.

Luas allows customers the option of submitting a Statement of Explanation for 14 days from the date of issue on the notice.

A standard fare will only be cancelled if the following information is provided.

If you have been issued with a standard fare notice for reason 00, please provide us with a copy of a 30 day student ticket with the student or young adult TFI Leap Card number clearly printed on the front of the ticket.) No other ticket produced after the fact will be deemed as a successful appeal.

  4. If you have been issued with a standard fare notice for reason 08, please provide a transaction history from your TFI Leap Card account that shows a successful touch on at the time you were travelling.

All other statements received will be deemed invalid and the appropriate SFN will be enforced.
